Why I like this song:
I'm a sucker for a real motivational anthem - and what makes this special is singer John Newman selling it like there's no tomorrow.
Also one can't underestimate the power of the chorus: "This time I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in". In fact whenever I do something major, i want a choir to barge in going: "This time I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in"

Song title: Heart of Glass
Artist: Blondie
Year: 1978
Why I like this song:
This year, Hobart was blessed with a triple bill and a half: Blondie with support from the Stranglers and the Saints. Definitely a revival of late 1970s goodness but no matter: I'd be a fool to miss it so I went and saw it.
First up was the Saints. Unsurprisingly, their material came from the post-Ed Kuepper period of the band but they still delivered. Like Fire Would was great live and Chris Bailey still had a stage presence, both singing and playing bass.
Then came the Stranglers. They played their hits (Golden Brown, Always the Sun, Peaches, No More Heroes) and they gave it their all. Of particular note was seeing Dave Greenfield doing his thing - he was hiding behind a battery of keyboards but I could still pick out a big smile on his face.
And finally there was Blondie: Roaring into life with an excellent set. True there were three remnants of their seventies heyday - Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke - but they still put on a great show. Funny thing: of the afore-mentioned three, it is interesting to note that Burke was the most energetic out of all of them, going all out on his drumkit.
So in the end this was a great show: Three veteran acts that delivered and proved they are no slouch in performing live. Yes they may have had plenty of time to perfect their live act but they still showed up a lot of younger acts and proved untarnished by age.

Song title: Walking on the Moon
Artist: The Police
Year: 1988
Why I like this song:
Recently I have been listening to the Police.
The Police have always been something of an anomaly to me: I knew quite a few of their hits as they've been something of a mainstay on radio. I knew they started out being part of the punk movement before stretching out and doing their own thing. I knew their approach incorporated chiming guitars and reggae. And I knew that many artists since have credited them as an inspiration. Truly an intimidating prospect if ever there was one.
Listening to the Police discography is a fascinating journey: Going from punk before quickly abandoning it and going in more diverse directions. And it doesn't take long before this band recognises it's strengths: Stewart Copeland's hyperactive drumming, Andy Summers' guitar playing and Sting's knowledge of what makes a snappy song. Granted there are some missteps but when this band hits, they knock it out of the park.
Rap is not a music genre where one will find any attempts to be romantic but the LL Cool J song above is a rare exception. Now with the cover...... my God.....
You know, I have heard various songs being redone by rappers but you hardly ever hear it going the other way. And it works. Largely, much like the rap genre, is all done in the delivery. Seriously I can only wonder how many ladies swooned upon hearing Luka's Irish accent.

Song title: Lets Stay Together Itsumo
Artist: Ritsuko Okazaki
Year: 2001
Why I like this song:
Its a moment distilled in time: I can't listen to this song without being reminded of when I sat down with some buddies back in 2003 and watched Fruits Basket for the first time. Similarly, this was also played at key points in the series, revealing the depths of the damaged souls that was the Sohma family. Other than that, this is indeed well executed: The beauty of the simplicity at the start would be enough to grab my attention but the emotional build up seals the deal.
Truly an astonishing cover: Granted the song is pretty good on it's own but here it's the dance treatment and it becomes something else entirely. Somehow I get the impression that this was the moment that dance music announced itself: By reworking one of the best-selling and well-regarded artists of the seventies. Sure the cover was clearly made out of admiration for that era but it's a strategy that paid off - and one that has been replicated many times since.

Why I like this song:
Recently I got a hold of the Mental As Anything album Liar Liar Pants on Fire.
If I recall correctly this was a big comeback album: After five years away the Mentals hit back with a big seller of an album. Well, I've had a look at their previous stuff so how would they fare in the middle of the nineties?
Well it has the fun and the humour that is commonplace with the Mentals but two things stand out for me: First, it seems more raw and less production heavy than previous albums. One might think that they were going with the trends of the time but, strangely, it works. It sounds less like a midlife crisis and more a band taking their own spin on what the kids were doing. And second, Greedy seems sidelined with two songs, of the twelve present, to his name. Odd given his status as a hitmaker. Was this an attempt by the Mentals to distance themselves from their eighties success?
Still it's a great album and a real surprise from the Mentals, proving they are still capable of pumping out solid songs even in decade that surely would've rendered them obsolete.

Why I like this song:
Once again, I come across an album I've been meaning to listen to but it's only now I'm getting around to listening to it. In this case, it's Angel Dust: commonly regarded as Faith No More's masterwork.
In all honesty, to approach a Faith No More album is something of a gamble: Sure they have big hits but they don't exactly represent the album as a whole. Indeed, teenaged me got Album of the Year on the back of it's singles (Ashes to Ashes and Last Cup of Sorrow) but the rest of the album caught me very much off guard. Could it happen again?
Well the experience of Album of the Year informed me of what to expect and yes, there is blend of the metal and the bizarre. However! This album is still a gem and is appealing in it's unpredictable nature. And hey, unpredictable is fine by me. In addition, I have to give credit to Faith No More for deliberately going against the grain in coming up this album, in defiance of the critics and the punters.
Also, a few weeks ago I turned thirty. Looks like I have another decade to go...

I've been putting off the Black Keys largely to the comparisons to the White Stripes: There's two of them, they play some modern take on blues rock and they have a colour-coded name. And with the Wonderstuff I have found that their music is a combination of goofiness and some snappy pop songs. Turns out, it was some of the best vocal harmonies one will ever hear. And it still sounds fresh years later which is indeed a feat in itself.
Is it possible to do a bad cover of this song? Apparently not.
I think its fair to say that if you know this song is through the familiar rock approach. So props to the Happy Mondays for doing something different: A dance version. And it still doesn't diminish the 'take a stand' vibe of the original. But then again, I don't think such a thing is possible.

Probably not but I have to admit this is quite the compelling listen. Yes it may be last gasp of the progressive rock that defined the 1970s but as a bunch of musicians each showing what they can do it certainly works a treat.
The original was fun but this is downright hilarious. Indeed, the power of pro-feminine assertations being uttered in a ludicrously macho voice can't be underestimated.

This may surprise some people but this is the first time I've heard it all the way through. I guess you can't be a fan of the Pink Floyd and not listen to it. I guess I was put off by the intimidation of it: It is one of the biggest selling albums of all time and it's the double album that many have tried to duplicate since. And yet, in recent years, there appears to be something of a backlash citing it being too long, too depressing, sexist and the point where the band ceased functioning as a proper unit. What is there to do but approach The Wall on my own terms (the best way of course).
Well its....something that's for sure. It certainly is a world apart from The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. Just came back from a weekend with my girlfriend. During it, she played me this and it stuck out for me.
This is because Avril has built her career around being some bratty punk rocker. Here however she drops it all completely for something more vulnerable. And it works wonders. It's certainly blurring the lines between devotion and desperation and that's what makes it so compelling.
Like a lot of other people, I got into Jimmy Little through his covers album The Messenger. He had a beautiful voice and was blessed with a solid backing behind him. And this, the final moment on the album, was the best cut. Like the rest of the album, it's a great album for a late night.

Perhaps this was less 'revenge of the nerds but with guitars' that was the first album and more leaning towards the emo territory that Weezer, apparently, kicked off. I will admit it was unusual that such subject matter would be expressed in a pop song - which in turn solidifies Weezer as music for outsiders. It was equally eyebrow-raising that Rivers would structure this album as a rewrite of the opera Madame Butterfly.

Why I like this song:
Once again, a song that captures a particular vibe - that being, going to the city on a summer evening, getting food, hanging around, and getting drunk.

Song title: The Other Side of the World
Artist: Dishwalla
Year: 1997
Why I like this song:
You wouldn't think the grunge/post-grunge movement would inspire a summer/chillout song but here we are. It's surprisingly effective as something to drift away to.
This song didn't take off and become a hit. Which is puzzling to me as it seems perfect for lounging around one's house at sunset with beer in hand (party atmosphere optional)

Song title: Pure Shores
Artist: All Saints
Year: 1999
Why I like this song:
I was never interested in boy/girl groups of the nineties but I will admit that I had a soft spot for this song. I found this to be a great song to chill on a summer evening. Seems the girl's harmonies and William Orbit's production made for a winning combination

Song title: Harold and Joe
Artist: The Cure
Year: 1990
Why I like this song:
You would think that The Cure would be the last band that could do a summer-time song but, for their gloom, I can't fault Robert Smith for his pop sensibilities. And this is one such example.
Somehow this has the impression of something playing at a pool party where there's a lot of fizzy raspberry drinks.
Proof that a cover can completely transform a song, here we have a song about one's religious convictions morphed into lounging around on a deck chair on a beach somewhere. In fact, it; so laid back in it's vibe, that said deck chair could drift out to sea and you wouldn't care.

Song title: 4
Artist: The Cruel Sea
Year: 1991
Why I like this song:
This song plays to two of the strengths of the Cruel Sea: a) they can crack out a great instrumental and b) they are very much a laid-back band.
This is indeed a song that I will forever associate with Australian summer. Near where I live there is a big river that leads out into the sea. On one side are some housing and on the other is a barbecue area and some bushland. And for me, this song speaks of chilling in said area on a sunny evening.
And if a song can take you to a time and place then it has done it's job well.

Song title: Island in the Sun
Artist: Weezer
Year: 2001
Why I like this song:
Perhaps the most summer song to ever exist.
One would argue that Rivers Cuomo is doing every trick in the book to evoke summer (guitar delay, lyrics about holidays and sun, laidback feel) but he succeeds! I've heard this for many summers since it's release and I hope hear it again for many summers more.

Song title: Summertime
Artist: Sundays
Year: 1997
Why I like this song:
Apparently this about being in your thirties and still being single.
But you wouldn't think that given the summer vibe this song gives off. Indeed, I recall many times hearing this in 1997/98 in the front room at my parent's house and chilling

Song title: Sunshine
Artist: 78 Saab
Year: 1999
Why I like this song:
I recall this song being something of an anthem back in the day. Granted it never reached a large audience but those who did loved it.
I've said previously some songs require a certain environment to work and, in that sense, one would think this song was custom made for summer roadtrips.

Song title: Summer
Artist: Buffalo Tom
Year: 1995
Why I like this song:
Some songs about summer seem to evoke memories of the summer time, of an era that is long gone (just ask the Beach Boys). This song is doing just that but through the perspective of nineties cynicism.
Having said that it does its job and it's still a damn good song.

Song title: Little Talks
Artist: Of Monsters and Men
Year: 2012
Why I like this song:
It's raucous but at the same time, sounds like nothing else going around at the moment Much like the video, it sounds like something to have an adventure to

Song title: Good Life (Buena Vida) (Tommy Onyx's Summer Fiesta Radio Mix)
Artist: Inner City
Year: 1999
Why I like this song:
The original may have typical bombast of early nineties dance music so hearing this, which takes the more chilled approach, is a surprise. It's aged better too.

Song title: Why Don't We Do Something
Artist: Hey Geronimo
Year: 2012
Why I like this song:
A new act that comes bursting out the gate with a catchy song and tonnes of personality? Works for me! If anything, this comes across as keeping the Goofball Aussie flag flying and maintaining a tradition pioneered by the Fauves and Mental as Anything. Well I have enjoyed those two acts so this is fine by me.

Song title: Turn Up Your Radio
Artist: Masters Apprentices
Year: 1971
Why I like this song:
Another bonafide Australian summer anthem. The two selling points are the horns and vocalist Jim Keays' performance. Allegedly he recorded the vocals when he was sloshed. Hearing it, I find no reason to doubt it.

Year: 2011
Why I like this song:
Took me a while to come to this but I'm glad I did. Gotta love a song that makes you dance to a point where it just makes you and not a word is spoken. It's all in the groove.

Song title: Power to the Passion
Artist: Midnight Oil
Year: 1982
Why I like this song:
It's a unique hybrid of surf rock and dance. Pretty much an unmistakable Australian summer anthem. And it's proof that you can get anyone to dance to an angry song.

Song title: Endless Summer
Artist: The Jezebels

Why I like this song:
Its big and it certainly evokes the imagery of blue summer skies. Great that someone has taken up the gauntlet of writing a summer anthem capable of of standing next to the greats.

Song title: Holiday
Artist: Ratcat
Year: 1992
Why I like this song:
A slice of Australian alternative that predated silverchair (yes that time period did exist. Stop denying that it didn't). Pretty much what it says in the title: Great soundtrack for a holiday and going on a road trip. Yes it's effectively a document of it's era but don't hold that against it.

Song title: Psychoactive Summer
Artist: Def FX
Year: 1995
Why I like this song:
It may be a product of it's time with it's fusion of dance and metal. It may have it's own slice of cheese ("Woohoooo! YEAH!!"). But damn, it's unbeatable as a summer anthem. That and vocalist Fiona Horne sure sells it.
