Choon of the Month: The Man

Original video located here. Accessed 24th July 2024

Song title: The Man

Artist: Killers

Year: 2017

Why I like this song:

Once upon a time, I heard, and enjoyed the Killers' "Smile Like You Mena It' as I found it a 'overcoming adversity' anthem. Turns out it wasn't.
I bring this up as they've done it again: What seems to be a 'pump-up' anthem is actually a lot of bragging from a shallow perspective.

Still if someone with low self-esteem does gleam some confidence out of this song then that's all right then....

Obituary: Word Gets Around

Original video located here. Accessed 21st July 2017

Song title: Word Gets Around

Artist: Hummingbirds

Year: 1989

Why I like this song:

R.I.P. Simon Holmes

Its doubtful that this band will ever get recognition they deserve: at a time when the walls between mainstream and alternative music were beginning to break down, these guys began drawing attention to the Australian alternative scene.
It is therefore unfortunate that they will most likely never be mentioned in the upper echelon of Australian bands. I mean, how can you refuse a pure pop gem such as this?
So here's to you Simon. Rest assured that your song did reach an audience and will not be forgotten.

Well that's one way to announce yourself: Oozing confidence and fearlessness.
And maybe it's the anime nerd in me but I do like the line about starring in your own anime,

The Asian Connection: Lullaby

Original video located here. Accessed 7th April 2021

Song title: Lullaby

Artist: Reiko Yasuhara

Year: 1999

Why I like this song:

For such an intense anime, it' just as well that Now and Then, Here and There ends on such a solemn note. Most likely to give time for the audience to process what they just witnessed.

It's haunting and really sneaks up on the listener - especially, as stated above, what precedes it...
