The Asian Connection: Sweet Drops

Original video located here. Accessed 8th April 2020

Song title: Sweet Drops

Artist: PUFFY

Year: 2011

Why I like this song:

Lately I have been watching the anime Usagi Drop (not much else to do when you're in lockdown) and finding much to my liking.
I'm also finding the opening quite cute - even though as I listen to it, I can't help but be reminded of the Clash's Rudie Can't Fail.
"How you get a rude and a reckless?"

Back to the Eighties: Age of Reason

Original video located here. Accessed 29th February 2020

Song title: Age of Reason

Artist: John Farnham

Year: 1988

Why I like this song:

Today was the last day of summer in Australia. So I thought I would share a memory with you all.

I will forever associate this song with summer. Or, to be more specific, bundling in the car with the rest of the family and going to a summer holiday (circa late 1980s/early 1990s). The five of us (my mother, father, bother and sister) may have all heard many songs over many an annual trip but this one sticks out in my mind as representing a time and place like no other.

Which means that as a song, this one has done its job properly.

In fact I'll go out on a limb and say I find this a much stronger song than You're the Voice

Obituary: It Must Have Been Love

Original video located here. Accessed 11th December 2019

Song title: It Must Have Been Love

Artist: Roxette

Year: 1988

Why I like this song:

R.I.P. Marie Fredriksson.

When I was a kid in the late eighties, Roxette seemed to me like the biggest stars on the planet: They had multiple hits that got tonnes of radio play and a constant presence on early morning rage. Of course in the years since, Roxette's material may come across as dated but to be one of Sweden's biggest pop exports (second only to ABBA) is nothing to sniffed at. And besides it's unlikely that Savage Garden would've existed without them.

Certainly this is both their best song and Marie's best vocal performance. Shame that voice has now been silenced.... :(

Obituary: Lets Go To Paradise

Original video located here. Accessed 12th April 2019

Song title: Lets Go To Paradise

Artist: Mental As Anything

Year: 1987

Why I like this song:

R.I.P. Greedy Smith

The Mentals certainly had no shortage of hits during the eighties - many of which came from Greedy,
And without whom, my childhood would've been a lot less colourful.
