Choon of the Month: Uptown Funk

Original video located here. Accessed 15th December 2014

Song title: Uptown Funk

Artist: Mark Ronson with Bruno Mars

Year: 2014

Why I like this song:

To be honest, I didn't think much of Mark Ronson's previous efforts under his own name but here? He blows them all out of the water. Bruno Mars sounds like he's having the time of his life, the funk is unstoppable and, no matter many times I've heard it, it has yet to get old.
Which in itself is a rare achievement in the world of pop music.

Some say it may be derivative but who cares when it sounds so irresistable?

The Asian Connection: Bouken Desho Desho?

Original video located here. Accessed 3rd December 2014

Song title: Bouken Desho Desho?

Artist: Aya Hirano

Year: 2006

Why I like this song:

Everyone knows the ending theme - largely due to that dance - so lets shine a light on that opening.
Its a fun opening and has a sense of mischief about it - which is very fitting for it's parent anime.

This Song Rocks: Here Comes Yesterday

Original video located here. Accessed 26th November 2024

Song title: Here Comes Yesterday

Artist: Violet Swells

Year: 2014

Why I like this song:

It's doubtful that this song would've existed without the success of Tame Impala. I guess it's a given that when one act becomes huge, a crop of soundalikes will follow.

But imitation is the biggest form of flattery: And this song does work a treat with some crunching guitars and a striking organ. Hopefully, this act can go on to do something more....
