Why I like this song:
Lately I have been listening to Yothu Yindi's Freedom album.
I was in primary school when Yothu Yindi got huge. And, like a lot of people, they were my first exposure to the music of Indigenous Australians. Granted it came presented with a gloss of dance beats but it was different and generated an interest in a culture I knew next to nothing about.
So whilst I have previously heard the Tribal Voice album I decided to go to the follow up.
And it pretty much follows the same formula: First Nations peoples singing about their lives and culture using their song structures with accompanied by dance beats. There are guest contributions from Neil Finn, David Bridie and Andrew Farriss (INXS) and there are some spectacular results. Sure the anger towards the white man has been toned down - perhaps a wise career move - but this is still a band that identified their strengths and are working with them.
As for the above song, I loved it in 1993 and I still love it now. Funny how it seems to fit in the post-Cold War period of the time...
